Kindred Spirits by May Torres

When a crime of passion is committed in a quaint suburban neighborhood, long buried secrets begin to surface. It was an ordinary Thursday night when Grace looked out her window to see her neighbor brutally murder his family. Unfortunately, her special gift, and long buried secrets of her own, conspire to put her at risk.

If the line between good and bad is drawn in blood, what happens when less than six degrees separates you from pure evil?

Pre-order it today at Touche Publishers: May Torres

Interview with May Torres about her new book Kindred Spirits:

What inspired you to write Kindred Spirits?

It's funny. Kindred Spirits was never intended to be a book. I had wanted to write some short stories to post on my blog so readers could get a feel for my writing. I wrote the first story and in the middle of writing the second, I decided to make a connection to the first. The whole thing snowballed from there until I had four separate short stories but connected in some way. Hope you're still with me .  My friend and author, R.C. Berry, liked the stories and asked (demanded) that I continue because it would make for a nice short story compilation book. So I did. I had a good amount of stories completed but had a hard time giving it a title. It was difficult to come up with one because there's not just one specific subject. I finally decided that the word kindred would be a part of the title because it means related. Then I naturally thought of the word that normally follows kindred, which is spirits. It was a fleeting thought but when R.C. Berry suggested kindred spirits, I knew that was the name I'd go with. It's what the book is about in more ways than one

Who is your favorite character? Why?

I like Mael. He's dark, cynical, and misunderstood. It's the typical bad boy attraction that plagues us ladies.

On a scale of 1-10 (10 being the scariest) how scary is Kindred Spirits?

That's a good question. I struggled so much with wondering if I could classify this book as horror. I love horror, it's my favorite genre to read as well as movies I watch. I don't scare easily. (Let's not get into my butterfly phobia) That's the reason why I find it so difficult to gauge the fear factor. What scares the hell out of most people, I don't find scary at all. But it's safe to say that Kindred Spirits is a solid 7, maybe 8 (As you can see I keep insisting it's not scary, don't trust me lol)  R.C. Berry, who has read it, definitely, without a doubt, says it's horror and that there are, indeed, frightening elements to the story.

A little birdy told me that Stephen King is your favorite author, how do you think he would like Kindred Spirits?

Yes, I love Mr King! I think he would like it because it takes ordinary people and turns them into monsters, which he's a master of. While there are otherworldly things going on, the heart of these stories involve human emotions from one side of the spectrum, way over to the other. The stories will have you feeling and thinking a certain way at the start, only to find out it wasn't what it appeared to be. I came across this quote, which will appear in the beginning of the book - “Fairly examined, truly understood, No man is wholly bad, nor wholly good.”--Theognis This is basically the theme of Kindred Spirits in a nutshell.

What scares you the most?

Let's get this out of the way, I have an actual phobia of butterflies(and moths). I don't ask anyone to understand it because I don't. They frighten me something awful. The metamorphosis creeps me the hell out. I don't like them being a caterpillar one minute and then a butterfly the next. Go ahead laugh. It's stupid, I know, but they scare me. (tadpoles to frog I don't particularly care for either lol) Anyway, people would be surprised to know that none of the horror movies scare me but disaster movies do. Day After Tomorrow, I Am Legend, even the destruction depicted in the movie Independence Day. I fear some kind of natural disaster wiping everything out. I don't like to see monuments destroyed or any traces of our existence gone.  I got bothered by Will Smith being all alone in I Am Legend, while most people were cringing at those creatures he faced. Yeah, I don't like end of the world stuff.

What is your favorite horror movie?

You're asking me to choose which child is my favorite
I'm a huge Michael Meyers fan. I admit to being scared of crazy people more than, let's say, ghosts, demons etc. I know it becomes ridiculous when he can't be killed but I just love him. The first Nightmare on Elm Street is also a favorite. Of course I loved the Exorcist. I loved the Sixth Sense, not sure if it's horror but really love movies with a twist. Most of the times I see the twist coming a mile away but that one got me! Also in the same fashion, I enjoyed The Others with Nicole Kidman. LOVED that scene towards the ending of The Ring. I'm fascinated by anything paranormal.

What are you going to be for Halloween this year?

I'm afraid I may not have time to come up with a costume this year. Due to getting Kindred Spirits ready for its Halloween release. When I dress up I like to be scary. To hell with all those cutesy or sexy kind of costumes for Halloween. I want to be dark and frightening. This year I would probably have loved to be zombie since I'm on my The Walking Dead kick. I also love being a dark angel/angel of death type character.  The new season of American Horror Story also has me wanting to be a freaky witch.

Reflections...

There is a story they tell of two dogs…

Both at separate times walk into the same room. One comes out wagging his tail while the other comes out growling.

A woman watching this goes into the room to see what could possibly make one dog so happy and the other so mad. To her surprise she finds a room filled with mirrors. The happy dog found a thousand happy dogs looking back at him while the angry dog found a thousand dogs growling back at him.

What you see in the world around you is a reflection of who you are.

Interview with Jennifer McDonald, Founder of Jenn's Butterfli Bowtique

Below you will find my interview with female entrepreneur Jennifer McDonald about her shop Jenn's Butterfli Bowtique.

Tell me about your shop.

My shop features handmade hair accessories, jewelry, toys/games & gift items. There is something for everyone at Jenn's Butterfli Bowtique.

Is everything handmade?

Most everything is handmade.  However, I do have several items that I sell that I have not personally made such as my Boys Faux Silk Ties & my Mustache earrings.

Some of the products offered at Jenn's Butterfli Bowtique
Do you do special orders?

Absolutely. I love custom orders.  Nothing makes me happier than to create something for someone to help them remember something special to them, create new memories or give to someone that is was made especially for them with love.  I can pretty much make anything anyone throws at me.  If I don't currently make it, I'm definitely willing to try to make it.

What's your favorite thing that you make?

Oh gosh !!  I really love everything I make, but I'd have to say that my custom Holiday Bling Bead Bottle Cap Ornaments are my favorite.  I have a lot of images to choose from and people can customize them with personal photos on the back.  I even have some for pets. :)  I have several customers that come back every year to buy them.

When did you open your shop?

November 2010

What motivated you to start your shop?

I entered a bow contest to win a set of pigtail bows for my youngest daughter for Thanksgiving on Facebook and as I was motivating my family members and friends to help me win, I started looking at other bow shops, seeing how pretty the bows were on Facebook and how much they cost.  I knew I could totally make them myself and for a lot less.  I've always been a pretty crafty person.  Then, I thought, why not sell them & other "crafty" stuff on Facebook myself for some extra money.  My hubby was in the Army and I wasn't working and we could use some extra income.  Thus, my shop was born.

Tell me about the name, Jenn's Butterfli Bowtique. How did you come up with it?

Well, I thought about a shop name for a really long time.  I wanted something that was catchy, but that had to do with something I liked.  Everything I came up with at first was taken, so finally I came up with Jenn's Butterfli Bowtique (Jenn - my name, Butterfli - I LOVE butterflies & it was a spelling that I didn't think I'd have to worry about anyone else having & Bowtique because at the time, I was strictly going to be selling bows.

How can people purchase your products?

My website is under construction & hopefully will be up and running soon, but in the mean time, you can shop at www.facebook.com/jennsbutterflibowtique by sending me a message on my fan page or emailing me at jenns_butterfli_bowtique@yahoo.com.

Interview with Paranormal Investigator Matt Cline

Paranormal investigation is something that has always been interesting to me. I love watching the investigations on TV but had never actually met a real Paranormal Investigator until last December. After meeting Matt, I started keeping up with the investigations that he goes on. To learn more about the paranormal group and the investigation process, I decided to interview Matt. Check out the in depth interview below.

What paranormal group are you with?

I'm with Appalachee Paranormal.

Tell me a little about Appalachee Paranormal.

We are based out of Princeton, WV. We have been featured on Travel Channel's Paranormal Challenge with Zak Bagans TV show, have done countless investigations in West Virginia, Virginia, and surrounding areas. We also have hosted many public paranormal events, ranging from public discussions, presentations, and full scale public investigations.

What kind of equipment does the group use?

We use a wide variety of paranormal equipment. We have several various forms of EMF detectors, REM type devices, digital recorders, spirit boxes, temperature sensors, etc. We use a lot of experimental equipment from Digital Dowsing. We also have infrared and full spectrum video cameras and photo cameras. We have an 8-channel DVR camera system. We enjoy trying a wide variety of techniques and experiments with lots of different equipment.

How long does an investigation usually last?

It depends on the location. Some spots want you out by a certain time and things of that nature. But I would say that we typically investigate a location 4-6 hours. Some more, some less.

How is an investigation conducted?

We like to start by touring the location. This gives us a chance to map out the location and often the owner will walk you through and give you history or experiences for particular spots. From there, we will do an EMF sweep of the entire location. This allows us to rule out any natural energy spots in the location. From there, it depends on the location. Typically, there are four of us on an investigation. Most places at this point we will break off into teams of two, switching partners and equipment throughout the night. If it's a larger location we will often stay together, at least for a period of time. During an investigation we use every technique possible to try to attempt to communicate.

What are some of the most active cases you have encountered?

There is a Catholic Church from the 1800's near us here in Princeton. It is truly the most active place we have ever been. We have done large, famous locations such as Trans Allegeheny Lunatic Asylum and Moundsville State Penitentiary, and those were great, but they don't compare in activity to this church. There are tons of questions to the reasoning of why this church may hold such activity that may never be fully answered, but it's a spot we can't stay away from because of the intense activity and mystery.

Do you have any examples of paranormal activity that you can share?

I will share a link of an investigation that we did in Bluefield, WV. We made a sort of webisode out of it and it contains several interesting incidences.

Also, you can search Appalachee Paranormal on YouTube and find most of our other online videos. Also check our website for evidence links.

What is the scariest situation that you have had while on an investigation?

The scariest situation for me, personally, was at the church I spoke of earlier. This was a personal experience that could never truly be understood or documented, but it was so intense for me that I know something truly happened. I was sitting in the 2nd row of pews on the left side of the curch. It's completely pitch black dark in here. Suddenly, I see something that appears to be darker than the darkness inside of the building slithering toward me. As it seemed to get closer it appeared to be, as I for some reason called it thereafter, a serpent. I literally started freaking out and jumped up to where I was standing on the pew to get off of the floor. Then, I looked back down where it had been and absolutely nothing was there. As I said, it's hard to even understand that. It honestly is for me too. But at the same time, I know what I experienced and how frightening it truly was.

What got you interested in the paranormal?

I had always had at least somewhat of an interest in it. As a child, just through folk lore, stories, and horror movies. Then I got asked to go on an investigation by Jack Wade, another member of our team. I went with him and the team he was on at that time and absolutely fell in love. From there, myself, Jack, Jeff Griffith, and Tony Riffe formed Appalachee Paranormal and have been going strong since.

Where is one place, that you haven't investigated, that you would most like to?

The place I would most like to investigate that I haven't would probably be Gettysburg. The battlefields, the buildings, the whole works. I'm kind of a history buff and the tragic past from there is unbelievable.

My Top 10 Scariest Movies....

Anyone that knows me knows that I'm a big chickens**t. I really don't do scary movies AT ALL. But out of all the ones that I have seen, here are my top 10 scariest ones.

10. Fire in the Sky

There's something about alien abduction movies that really creeps me out.

9. Blair Witch Project

Am I the only one that thought this was real when it came out?

8. It

If you aren't creeped out by clowns, you should be.

7. The Shining

This is a classic.

6. The Mothman Prophecies

Seeing a strange creature with red eyes then something bad happens...yeah that's not scary at all. And not to mention that people actually see this thing in real life.

5. The Exorcist

This movie oozes creepiness. I mean her head spins all the way around and stuff.

4. Halloween

You can't have a scary movie list without the classic Halloween movie.

3. Saw

I have only seen the first Saw movie. I refuse to watch the others.

2. Nightmare on Elm Street

If you read the post "Random Facts About Me" then you already know that I just can't handle Freddy. I think it's the whole killing people in their dreams thing that really gets me. If I watch this, I won't sleep for a week lol.

1. Paranormal Activity

This by far is the scariest movie for me. I watched it during the day and still jumped out of my skin! The way it's taped made it even worse. It's like we are really watching this happen to these people. I just can't handle the demonic hauntings.
